Understanding Lot Holds

Lot holds allow you to pause construction progress on a lot and record why work has been temporarily stopped. When a lot is on hold, those days are automatically excluded from build day calculations, ensuring your schedules and reports accurately reflect actual construction time.

What are Lot Holds?

Lot holds are date ranges that indicate when construction is paused on a specific lot. They're useful for tracking periods when work cannot proceed due to:

  • Permit issues or delays
  • Inspection requirements
  • Weather conditions
  • Material shortages
  • Other project blockers
  • Key Features:

  • Hold periods are automatically subtracted from build day calculations
  • Only one active hold can exist at a time per lot
  • Holds can be open-ended (no end date) or have a specific date range
  • All holds are permanently recorded for audit and reporting purposes

Viewing Lot Holds

From the Lot Detail Page

When viewing a lot, you can see if there are any active holds and access all hold information.

Active Hold Alert

If a lot currently has an active hold, you'll see a warning banner at the top of the page:

This banner appears automatically when:

  • The hold's start date has passed or is today
  • The hold has no end date, or the end date is in the future

Opening the Holds Drawer

To view all holds for a lot (both active and past):

  1. Navigate to the lot detail page
  2. Click the "View Holds" button in the page header (next to "Modify Lot" and "Timeline" buttons)

This opens a drawer panel on the right side of the screen showing all holds for the lot.

Inside the Holds Drawer

The holds drawer displays:

  • All holds for the lot, ordered by start date (oldest first)
  • Each hold shows:
  • Start date and end date (or "Present" badge if no end date)
  • The reason for the hold

Creating a Lot Hold

Required Permission: You must have the "Manage Lot Holds" permission to create holds.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the Holds Drawer
    • - Click the "View Holds" button on the lot detail page
  2. Click "Add New Hold"
    • - The button is located at the bottom of the holds list
    • - Note: This button will be disabled if there's already an active hold
  3. Fill in the Form
    • - Start Date (required): Select when the hold begins
    • - End Date (optional): Select when the hold ends
    • - Leave blank for an open-ended hold (no end date)
    • - Reason (required): Enter a clear explanation (max 255 characters)
    • - Examples: "Waiting for permit approval", "Weather delay", "Material shortage"

Important Restrictions

  • Only one active hold can exist at a time per lot
  • If you try to create a new hold while one is active, you'll see this message: _"Cannot create new hold while there is an active hold"_
  • To create a new hold, you must first end the active hold (by setting an end date)

Editing a Lot Hold

Required Permission: You must have the "Manage Lot Holds" permission to edit holds.

How to Edit

  1. Open the Holds Drawer
    • - Click "View Holds" on the lot detail page
  2. Access the Hold Menu
    • - Find the hold you want to edit
    • - Click the "⋯" (three dots) menu icon on the right side of the hold entry
  3. Select "Edit"
    • - Click "Edit" from the dropdown menu
  4. Modify the Hold
    • - The hold will expand to show editable form fields
    • - Update the start date, end date, or reason as needed
    • - Same validation rules apply (end date must be after start date)

Ending an Active Hold

To end an active hold (one without an end date), you need to edit it and add an end date.

Steps to End a Hold

  1. Open the Holds Drawer and find the active hold (it will show "Present" as the end date)
  2. Save Changes
    • - Click "Save" to update the hold
    • - You'll see a success message: "Lot hold updated successfully"
  3. Click the "⋯" menu and select "Edit"
  4. In the end date field, select today's date or the date the hold actually ended
  5. Click "Save"

Once saved, the hold will show both start and end dates, and it will no longer be considered "active."

Deleting a Lot Hold

Required Permission: You must have the "Manage Lot Holds" permission to delete holds.

⚠️ Warning: Deleting a hold permanently removes it from the system and cannot be undone. This will also affect build day calculations.

How to Delete

  1. Open the Holds Drawer
    • - Click "View Holds" on the lot detail page
  2. Access the Hold Menu
    • - Find the hold you want to delete
    • - Click the "⋯" (three dots) menu icon
  3. Select "Delete"
    • - Click "Delete" from the dropdown menu (it's red to indicate a destructive action)
  4. Confirm Deletion
    • - A confirmation modal will appear
    • - Review the hold details shown in the modal
    • - Click "Delete" to confirm or "Cancel" to abort

Understanding Hold Status

Active vs. Past Holds

Active Hold:

  • Start date has passed or is today
  • No end date, or end date is in the future
  • Shows warning banner on lot detail page
  • Blocks creation of new holds
  • Past Hold:

  • Has both start and end dates
  • End date is in the past
  • No banner displayed
  • Does not affect current scheduling

Visual Indicators

  • "Present" Badge: Blue badge next to end date indicates an open-ended active hold
  • Date Range: Regular date format indicates a closed hold with specific dates
  • Warning Banner: Yellow alert at top of lot page indicates an active hold

How Lot Holds Affect Build Days

When you create a hold, it automatically affects build day calculations for the lot.

Key Points:

  • Calendar Days: Hold days count as calendar days (including weekends and holidays)
  • Automatic Calculation: Hold days are subtracted from total calendar days to calculate build days
  • Open-Ended Holds: If a hold has no end date, build days will show as "N/A" (indeterminate) until the hold is ended
  • Overlapping Holds: If multiple holds overlap, the system counts each day only once (no double-counting)

Example:

If a build takes 30 calendar days but has a 7-day hold period, the build days calculation would be:

  • Total calendar days: 30
  • Hold days: 7
  • Build days: 23

This ensures your schedules and reports accurately reflect actual construction time, excluding periods when work cannot proceed.

Common Questions

Can I have multiple holds at once?

No, only one active hold can exist per lot at a time. You must end the current active hold before creating a new one.

What happens if I don't set an end date?

The hold becomes "open-ended" and will remain active until you edit it to add an end date. Build days will show as "N/A" during this time.

Can I edit a past hold?

Yes, you can edit any hold (active or past) as long as you have the manage permission. This is useful for correcting dates or adding more details to the reason.

Are hold days counted in weekends?

Yes, hold days count as calendar days, which includes weekends and holidays. This ensures consistency with payroll and scheduling.

Can I see hold history?

Yes, all holds (both active and past) are displayed in the holds drawer, ordered by start date from oldest to newest.
